By and large the match was evenly balanced during the first half as both sides had their chances to score.
Downs striker Mabuthi Khenyeza missed a chance to score in the 17th minute when he sent the ball over the bar, with goal keeper Kalililo Kakonje out of position.
Seven minutes later AmaZulu had a good chance when Bradley Ritson pulled the trigger, but Sundowns keeper Brian Baloyi made a good save.
The next chance fell to the Brazilians as Katlgo Mphela failed to hit the target with a header in the 27th minute, before Riston's attempted bicycle kick for Usuthu six minutes later also flew off target.
Five minutes before the break Downs missed another scoring chance when Mphela failed to get on the end of Elias Pelembe’s cross.
The home team took the lead four minutes after the break when Papi Zothwane scored with a header.
In the 65th minute Zothwane completed his brace when he side-footed home to double Sundowns' lead.
As Usuthu struggled to mount a come-back challenge, it could have been 3-0 late in the game, but Pelembe missed the target with a header.
